“We tried calling the ambulance, but it didn’t turn up,” said Renu Devi, resident of Shrirampur village, Gaunaha block, Bihar.

Renu Devi had to deliver her child in a private hospital, even when she didn’t want to. They tried to contact the government ambulance service. But after hours of waiting the ambulance did not turn up.

Her relatives then carried her on a bullock cart to the nearest hospital.

This is a reality for every pregnant woman in Gaunaha block, which has only one ambulance for 18 villages. That one ambulance also never reaches on time.

This is a ground report by Video Volunteer (VV) community correspondent, Tanju Devi. This series on community monitoring of maternal health is supported by Oxfam India.

People in the block are now writing to the government and demanding atleast two more ambulances in the block.

Pregnant women living below poverty line in India are entitled to two government schemes -- Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (JSSK).

Under them they are entitled:

•  Free and cashless delivery

•  Free drugs and consumables

•  Free diet during stay in the health institutions
