Nearly 60 participants from 50 districts of Uttar Pradesh conducted a status check on the Right to Education (RTE) Act, five years after it was implemented.

Here is a status check. More than 6 million children in India are still out of school! Even today a whopping 92% government elementary schools in the country do not comply with all RTE Act norms. Click here to see India’s RTE scorecard.

Representatives from the Dalit community, Dalit-led organisations, nomadic community and other scheduled caste sections talked about important issues like child trafficking, untouchability, discrimination, corporal punishment, discontinuation of scholarship, religion based curriculum etc.

It was noted that these issues have an effect on the education of children from  Dalit communities.

A signature campaign will be organised by the Dalit Action Group in 50 districts on April 1, 2015.  The charter of demands will be submitted to 28 state legislators and 12 parliamentarians.

The campaign will not end here. It will move forward with mass mobilization in its next phase in the month of May.

Future plan of action

  • Demand Inclusion of Dalit representatives in school management committees (SMCs) especially in leadership position
  • Facilitate admission of Dalit children in private school under section 12 (C)
  • Organise candle march on April 14.
