Like most families in Takkampur village of Kochugaon block in Kokrajhar district, Pundi Soren, 60, lost her house and her assets in the recent violence that hit Assam in December 2014.

On December 24, 2014, Pundi along with her daughter and her granddaughter, moved to a camp located in a school.

According to Pundi, the conditions were cramped and allowed no privacy to her family of three.

Moreover, school authorities were also insisting that the conflict affected displaced persons would soon have to move to another location, as the schools needed to resume classes in January.

Oxfam intervened

Oxfam’s emergency response team quickly constructed a community shelter for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in the schools.

The community shelter, with the capacity to house 16 families, gives them the much-needed privacy and a safe space to reside along with their community members.

Pundi and other vulnerable displaced persons (such as elderly, widows, and large families) are currently residing in the two community shelters constructed in Supol Tudu Memorial Research Centre (Kochugaon camp).

Pundi Soren now feels safe in the Oxfam community shelter in Kochugaon.

Impact of Oxfam’s intervention

Pundi moved to the community shelter on January 10, 2014 along with her daughter and granddaughter. She feels safe in the Oxfam community shelter and it allows her some privacy. Moreover, while living in the shelter Pundi doesn’t fear the risk of being moved to another location. Pundi and other affected persons from her village can stay on until they start rebuilding their houses and their lives in their village.
