Scripting Her Own Fate

Scripting Her Own Fate

Gurbari Sidar is a 17 year old girl from Shankatpalli village of Dabhara Block in Chhattisgarh. Just like the other girls in her village, who were married off early, Gurbari’s marriage too was planned by her parents. Her elder sister was also married off soon after she completed her Class 10.

But before this could happen to Gurbari, she joined the girls group by Nivedita Foundation, partner of Oxfam India in Chhattisgarh. Through the intensive workshops on gender issues, she learned about gender equality and adversaries of child and early marriage. But her brother and father wanted to marry her off soon. For them Gurbari was “parayadhaan” (Someone else’s property), thus, the sooner she is married the better it is.

Gurabari tried her best to convince her parents, but it was difficult. She then requested her mother Larmin Bai Sidar to join the meeting of group of women facilitated by Nivedita Foundation that discussed matters relating to gender equality. After attending the meetings of the women group, Larmin realised Gurbari’s perspective. She was successful in convincing the rest of her family members.

Gurabari is no longer pressurized to marry, she has decided to continue her studies, pursue her hobbies viz. tailoring, teaching dance to children and take decisions regarding her future on her own.
