The government of Odisha is set to receive a joint resolution from 155 school cabinets stating the unavailability of classrooms and teachers.

It is interesting to note here that of those 155 school cabinets, demands by rural schools and urban schools varied.

Urban school cabinets want: Exposure visits, dining hall, song, yoga and dance teacher

Rural school cabinets want: Unavailability of drinking water with the onset of summers, school boundary, better classrooms and sufficient teachers

A staggering 92% government elementary schools in India are yet to fully implement the Right to Education (RTE) Act

WHAT IS A SCHOOL CABINET?

Have you heard the term ‘school cabinet’ for the first time? Don’t be confused. Below we explain its purpose.

A school cabinet comprises of student representatives -- including boys and girls -- who are assigned different responsibilities.

The members of the cabinet are either elected or nominated (generally nominated) by the teacher/head teacher.

A school cabinet is headed by the Chief Minister. She or he is supported by the education minister, health and hygiene minister, environment minister, sports and culture minister, discipline minister etc.

Each minister is responsible to look after the affairs of his/her department in the school.

There are four objectives behind this initiative:

To have all children in school
Enhancing leadership qualities of children
Proper management of school by children
Emphasis on girls education.

Under the #HaqBantaHai campaign in Odisha, Oxfam India aims to reach all school cabinets, have an orientation meeting and train them so that these cabinets are aware of their role and duties.
