Phool Kumari got married at the age of 10 and was pregnant with her first child at the age of 14. The child did not survive for more than a month.

Child marriage is rampant among the Bilhor tribe in Chatrutand Panchayat, Baghmara block of Dhanbad district in Jharkhand.

“We are trying to spread awareness in the village on the adverse effects of child marriage. But we need support from the Block Development Officer (BDO). The BDO has never come to the village to talk to the people and make them aware on the issue,” said Janardan Mahto, resident of the village.

This is a ground report by Video Volunteer (VV) community correspondent, Halima Ejaj. This series on community monitoring of maternal health is supported by Oxfam India.

Pregnant women living below poverty line in India are entitled to two government schemes -- Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (JSSK).

Under them they are entitled:

  • Free and cashless delivery
  • Free drugs and consumables
  • Free diet during stay in the health institutions
