Oxfam is responding to the floods in Manipur and Gujarat

Incessant rain due the cyclone Komen, washed away bridges and national highways besides rendering thousands of people homeless in Manipur. 

Low-lying areas in capital Imphal and its outskirts have been inundated. The state has witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall during the days, with several rivers flowed above or crossed the danger level. 

Around 21 people are reportedly dead due to landslides.

What Oxfam is doing in Manipur?
  • Oxfam has deployed a 5 member humanitarian team in Manipur.
  • Oxfam’s response in Manipur is in Thoubal district.
  • Rehabilitation of water sources and chlorination of water sources is ongoing. 
  • Emergency shelter materials have reached Imphal and distribution has begun.
  • Preparatory work for cash transfer to 400 households is also ongoing. Given the security concerns in Manipur , extensive discussion have taken place between Oxfam and local agencies and how risks will be managed.
The situation in Gujarat

The flash floods in Gujarat has claimed the lives of 70 people so far.

Fourteen district and about 40 lakh (four million) people were affected by the floods in Gujarat. 

Continuous heavy rains for five consecutive days from July 28, 2015 to August 1, 2015, have left the otherwise dry districts of Patan and Banaskantha in a flood ravaged situation.

What Oxfam is doing in Gujarat?
  • Tarpaulin and ground sheet – 1000 households
  • Cash transfer – 600 households
  • Public health promotion: a kit of 5 bathing soaps and 3 washing soaps will be provided to 1000 HH along with Shelter NFI.
