No respite for 72-year-old Sitaram, a month after #NepalEarthquake

When the massive aftershock of 7.3 magnitude hit on May 12, 2015, 72-year-old Sitaram and his wife Vishnu were inside their small house in Milbichauna village, Gorkha district.

Now their home is reduced to a rubble and they are have to live in the open. With his voice breaking from the pauses he takes to catch his breath, Sitaram recalls the trauma of that day.

“When the tremors started, me and wife rushed out of the house, covering our heads and stones from the roof started to fall. We barely made it out of the house, when it collapsed,” said Sitaram.

After having worked in India as a security guard for shops and corporate houses, Sitaram eventually decided to come back to his village and make his own house.

“It was not big house, but I made it from my own hands. Now it is ruined,” he says.

With no children to look after them, Sitaram and Vishnu only have each other for company and are facing a bleak future. But the septuagenarian is quick to thank Oxfam on the relief supplies being provided to them.

But he has some difficult questions that need answering. “Now the monsoon will arrive, then where will be stay? What will we eat? What will we do? There will be landslides, we could fall and get hurt. So the future does not look good for us,” said a gloomy Sitaram.
