Media training workshop, a decade after 2004 tsunami

To mark the 10th anniversary of the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Oxfam India is organising a media workshop to discuss reportage on disasters, survivors and women in disasters.

The tsunami destroyed thousands of lives along Asia’s coastal communities. The anniversary comes at the end of a year when successive disasters have changed lives and landscapes across India, almost irrevocably.

How we perceive and narrate these experiences plays an important part in how we help rebuild communities. In particular, it is when we take cognizance of the gendered impact of disasters and the work that women have done in the relief and recovery phase, that we are actually narrating the story in its entirety. With the increasing number of natural disasters, man-made and political conflicts, every media house is preparing their teams on how to respond to such emergencies. This workshop is an answer to that.

Combining content-based presentations with practical working sessions, the workshop sessions will cover the following topics:

• Understanding disasters and disaster risk reduction (DRR)
• Gender and disasters
• Women’s agency and leadership
• Gender-sensitive media reporting

We are also hoping this workshop will help in the planning of the tsunami anniversary coverage by various media organisations.

Oxfam’s humanitarian work

Our humanitarian teams respond to natural disasters, such as floods in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Assam, with long term rehabilitation interventions. We also extended humanitarian support to survivors of the communal conflict at Muzaffarnagar.

Last year Oxfam provided humanitarian support after four disasters in India.

The workshop, “From Survival and Resilience to Leadership: Training for journalists on disasters, women and gender,” will be held in Chennai on November 14-15, 2014. It is jointly being organised by Oxfam India, the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (Ahmedabad) and The Prajnya Trust (Chennai).
