Maternal health consultation in Delhi yields rich recommendations

The national consultation on maternal health was held in New Delhi on January 5-6, 2015. The event was jointly hosted by Oxfam India and Common Health .

Oxfam India and Common Health have been working together for over two years with 'Dead Women Talking' process that aims to look at maternal deaths and maternal health from a social determinants and rights perspective.

A compilation and analysis of 124 maternal deaths documented as part of this process has been published recently as the report, "Dead Women Talking: a civil society report on maternal deaths in India". Oxfam India also contributed to this report.

Objectives of the consultation:

  • Take stock of the issues that emerge from this initiative on the maternal health scenario in the country
  • Develop consensus on certain urgent issues - like, availability of blood, role of midwives (dais), etc.
  • Plan further action and advocacy on these issues.

The first day of the consultation had discussion on the above mentioned three issues. The experts in attendance helped in providing key policy recommendations.

On the second day, the recommendations from the report and previous day’s sessions were presented to the major International NGOs working on maternal health and representatives from Haryana and Madhya Pradesh state governments. To read the recommendations Click here
