India matters: Safe City Dialogue - Mumbai Slums

India matters: Safe City Dialogue - Mumbai Slums

Slum and pavement dwellers comprise 60% of Mumbai's population but occupy only 15% of the space. As we usher in the age of modernism, urban spaces in India are becomingly increasingly unsafe and regressive.

This video is a dialogue between the residents of 'Dharavi'- the largest slum in Asia and communicates their daily struggle for safety in the city. At the top of every girls wishlist here is a private toilet- because across shanties in India’s cities the lack of one could be the difference between safety & sexual assault. The communal bathrooms in Dharavi are a source of great distress-jointly shared by 150-200 women they do not even have proper doors and are not well lit. As such women in the area face a daily battle in accessing these toilets; particularly at night.

Of late, the threat to women’s security has heightened as a result of urban areas being overcrowded, increased unemployment in the city, illiteracy and lack of accountability.

There is an urgent need to address these issues since half the population of the country lives under constant threat. Oxfam has filmed a series of these interviews in collaboration with NDTV  and is working toward raising awareness for the same.
