The Eastern Indian state of Manipur was hit by an earthquake that measured 6.7 on the Richter scale at 4:35 am local time on January 4. The epicentre was in Tamenglong district. Six people have reportedly died, and as many as 100 have been critically injured. Local authorities are addressing the crisis, and search-and-rescue operations are being conducted.

The North-East region of India is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. Oxfam is assessing the Manipur earthquake situation. A two-member team is being deployed to the affected area and we are coordinating with local partners to gather more information about the situation. We will assess the extent of the damage and immediate humanitarian needs following the earthquake.

The impact of the damage is expected to be high as we await more details. Most of the affected areas are built-up urban locations such as Imphal, the state capital, where a newly-built six storey building has collapsed. Damage to other buildings has also been reported.

Several buildings in Silchar in the neighbouring state of Assam were damaged by the tremors, while information from Mizoram is still awaited.
