Collective Action to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls at home

The women’s group of Sahbhagi Vikas, Oxfam India Partner in Jharkhand are breaking one norm at a time with their firm determination and grit. When Shivani brought the matter of her abusive son Robin to the women’s group, they decided to take action.

Robin Kerketta son of Shivani and Julius Kerketta, dropped out of school and started staying at home doing nothing. Julius who migrated to Haryana in search of livelihood, sent money home every month. Robin does not support his family in anyway and wastes his days drinking country made liquor. He beats up his sister and mother every day after drinking. His family did not share about this problem with anyone but when things went out of hand, they brought this matter to the women’s group.

The group initially tried to counsel Robin but he threatened them. They then decided to take action and called a village meeting. There too Robin threatened all the villagers. The village panchayat then informed him he is 18 years adult now and if he continues with his ways, they will have to register a case against him and he shall end up being in jail. Hearing this, Robin confessed and promised that he will not repeat his actions ever. The family is living in peace now.
