#ChennaiFloods Update: Oxfam is close to getting relief materials on the ground

The Oxfam team has reached on the ground in Cuddalore with the relief materials for the flood-affected population in Tamil Nadu.

However, all highways leading to Chennai have been closed. The Chennai airport and railways stations are also shutdown.

With each passing day it has become increasingly difficult to reach Chennai with the relief supplies. 

The city of Chennai received 35 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

Rains continue to hit Tamil Nadu making humanitarian assistance an increasingly challenging task. 

Large numbers of people are waiting for aid and access to many locations in the city of Chennai is blocked.

Oxfam will be providing relief to 7000 households, which is nearly 30,000 people.

Oxfam is responding alongsideother agencies to the urgent need of clean water, emergency shelter.

Oxfam is working with its partner BLESS in Cuddalore, and are planning to set up two bases -- one in Chennai and one in Cuddalore.

An estimated 60% of water sources in Chennai and Cuddalore have been damaged and there are concerns of water contamination.

Situation on the ground:

The Indian military has evacuated more than 10,000 residents stranded in Tamil Nadu.

The death toll from flooding has increased to 280 and is expected to rise.

68,000 people are in makeshift shelters in Cuddalore. With the rains not letting up, thesituation is expected to worsen.

Worst affected areas are -- Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvalu District andCuddalore.

54 people have reportedly died because of the floods in Andhra Pradesh.

Nearly 3 Million people are affected by these floods and they need your urgent help.
