1. Personal hygiene is a must!
Remember to wash and dry your hands and feet carefully after being exposed to flood water, as the water can contain dangerous and harmful bacteria. Wash and dry hands before handling any food, and protect any open cuts and wounds with waterproof bandages to avoid infection.

2. Wash food carefully before eating
Fruits and vegetables must be cleaned thoroughly to remove any traces of flood water that may have contaminated them. Food should be cooked in clean water to minimize the risk of food poisoning. If availability of food is limited due to the flood situation, try to eat high-protein, high-energy food that can sustain you for longer periods.

3. Do not use the flood waters!
Even after boiling, the flood water may contain harmful substances that can lead to health risks. Drink only clean, boiled water from a trusted source. The flood water should also not be used for bathing, washing clothes or dishes.

4. Be wary in areas where water has receded
The flood water may weaken roads and walls, which can collapse with little or no warning. Avoid these areas until they have been marked safe.

5. Don’t use electrical appliances affected by the floods
They may cause short circuits, electrical fires or electrocution. Handle these appliances with extreme caution. Do not use any electrical appliances when wet or standing in water.

6. Watch out for strong currents when sitting in a boat
Boats may also be affected by submerged fences, posts or road signs that can cause accidents and injury.

7. After the floods, wear protective gear while cleaning
Use thick rubber gloves, eyeglasses and protective shoes while cleaning debris from areas around your home that have been affected by the flood.
