BRIDGING THE GAP

BRIDGING THE GAP

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Oxfam India through its education program aims to do just that. This year, Oxfam in Chhattisgarh aims to empower and enrol children especially differently-abled in schools. In 2017, because of kind-hearted donors like you, we benefited nearly 1.5 lakh people in Chhattisgarh through our Education program.

We partnered with Prerak organization and Shikhar Yuva Manch (SYM) in various villages of Raipur and organized public hearings, development sessions, workshops and various other activities. The objectives of such engagements are multi-fold and aim mainly to help differently-abled children to gain education and live better lives.

- We aim to draw the attention of government officials towards the problems faced by differently abled people/children
- Help them in school enrolment
- Create friendly-nourishing environment for them in schools
- Provide scholarships, pension and Marg Rakshan Bhatta (Conveyance Safety Allowance)
- Build ramp, railing, portable drinking water and disable toilets in public places and schools
- Provide teaching learning material for children with special needs

Capacity Building Programme

Capacity Building Programme aims to help communities understand the importance of education, school facilities, human rights, children’s all-round development, hygiene and sanitation and much more. We organised a capacity building programme in village Jenjra of Gariyaband district to motivate the School Management Committee (SMC) and the Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRI) to actively participate in the school education processes. We were able to conduct the programmes in various villages.

We organised workshops to motivate parents to help differently-abled children get enrolled in schools. We also motivated teachers to provide extra classes to mainstream differently-abled children in their study as also organised various extracurricular activities to motivate children for further education enrichment.

School Enrolment Drive

Together with schools, SMC, Bal Panchayat and PRI members, we organized enrolment drives in the month of April to July 2017. The drive was completed in three parts.
First: The drive started through formal discussions with all the stakeholders on issues related to parents’ and teachers’ awareness, school performance and infrastructure, teachers’ availability, children development and, facilities and enrolment for differently-abled children.
Second: A “sensitization walk” was conducted which covered 11 villages to generate awareness amongst parents for enrolment of their children in school.
Third: Names of children, eligible for admission were collected. Parents were given counselling session at their home and also at the Panchayat to motivate them to enrol their children in schools.

This resulted in parents enrolling their children in school and helping their child in development.

Children Group and Bal Panchayat

The Children Group and the Bal Panchayat play a vital role in supporting the implementation of Right To Education Act 2009 at grass root level. In six months, 24 meetings were organised by the children group members to motivate drop out differently-abled children and their parents for school enrolment. 170 Bal panchayat members through various sessions gained skills on how to manage their panchayats and engage with communities and school development activities. This has helped children improve in their studies and have given them a positive mindset.

Such engagements and collaborations have led to benefiting nearly 1.5 lakh people in Chhattisgarh.
•    Parents have enrolled their differently-abled children in school
•    Awareness about the importance of education has helped various institutes take responsibility to create a friendlier environment for differently-abled children
•    New school buildings project has been approved by the authority
•    Teachers are also being appointed especially for the differently-abled children in government schools
•    The school dropout rate has drastically reduced in various villages of Chhattisgarh

The quality of education in Chhattisgarh still remains as one of the foremost issues, which needs immediate attention. The state government has already closed around 2,900 schools under rationalisation and further thinking on more closures and less of states onus for providing education.

Oxfam India continues to work in the six poorest states of India (Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Orissa) to send the most vulnerable and underprivileged children back to school. When generous donors like you support Oxfam India, we are able to conduct various workshops, motivate parents and teachers and help underprivileged and differently-abled children enrol in school. People like you help children live better lives and can stop the government from shutting down schools.
