Oxfam India stands in solidarity with #MeToo movement

Women in media and film fraternity have bravely come out and reported cases of sexual harassment at workplace by fellow colleagues and seniors. Since the 1990s, many women have been raising their voices against sexual harassment at workplace. Unfortunately, they were often not believed and theirs was a lonely struggle so far. Hence this becomes a historic moment for women’s rights in India.

Oxfam India stands in solidarity with the fearless individuals who have spoken out. Let us believe them and the harassment they have faced and support them to speak up and follow due processes. We firmly believe that #MeToo must not be construed as a war against men but rather challenging systemic power and its abuse. We also believe that at the same time, the work towards the strengthening of the due processes must continue at all cost. Organisations must follow up with the relevant mechanisms to enable this change.

Sexual harassment at the workplace is a violation of human rights as given within the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). It goes against several fundamental rights guaranteed within the Indian Constitution. Women and other non-conforming genders have equal rights to work in a safe environment while achieving their full potential as citizens of this country.
