The Irresistible & Oppressive Gaze: A Survey Report by Oxfam India

 

Whether the hard core professional and the doting daughter in Piku or Priyanka Chopra reigning the rings in Mary Kom—these films have somehow helped us introspect. They have influenced the way we see women around. And since then, we know that films somehow have an influence on how we think and function.

 Extending on its efforts to recognize films as a vehicle to challenge gender norms, Oxfam India commissioned an on ground survey to understand the impact that mainstream Indian cinema has created on the issue of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) in India.

 Popular films have been analysed based on their representation of women. Emerging trends and messages were correlated with perceptions and attitudes of youth in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh to understand the impact films have on the mindsets of youth.  Qualitative discussions were held with men and women to understand how viewing films contribute to or affirm their attitudes towards VAWG.
