COVID-19 has infected more than 45,000 people in India; more than 1500 have died so far. Informal sector workers, who constitute 90% of India’s workforce, are hit the hardest by this unprecedented crisis. In order to curb the spread of infection, the country was first put on a 21-day lockdown from 25 March 2020; this has since been extended twice. While this was an important step to flatten the curve, the lockdown has pushed millions of people to the brink of poverty in India.
Oxfam India has been on the ground, carrying out an integrated COVID-19 relief response for vulnerable families to ensure no one is left behind in these trying times. They are working in nearly 14 states and have reached out with cooked meals, safety kits, and dry ration.
