Uttar Pradesh - a leading sugarcane producing state of India - accounts for 95% small, 67% marginal and several large farmers that depend solely on sugarcane cultivation for their livelihood. Despite the large numbers of farmers and labourers involved in this agricultural activity, the industry is strife with human and labour rights violations. From wage gaps and untimely payments to unsafe working and living conditions, the situation on the ground is rather grim. In light of this, there is a call for ensuring the human and labour rights of these workers and ensuring a responsible sugar supply chain.
In March 2021, a charter of demands was drawn up by a cluster of farmers with support from Oxfam India and AIM Trust. These were submitted to the Cane Commissioner.
