The richest 10% of the world now owns 76% of the world’s wealth, while the poorest half of the population owns merely 2% of it. Women, ethnic, caste and racial minorities have been pushed further behind with the COVID-19 pandemic further intensifying inequality. The G20 needs to create a strong policy response to counter growing wealth and social inequalities because of its collective economic leverage and far-reaching influence over global and national policy matters.
This, in turn, requires mobilization by global civil society by creating an official engagement group of Civil 20 (C20). This policy brief makes the case for the Indian presidency of the G 20 being the space for the creation of a Working Group on Inequality.
