About the Project:

  • The Institute of Social Development has an overall goal to reduce the social acceptance of violence against women.
  • It wants to bring a positive change in the policy and programme environment that perpetuates its acceptance at an institutional and community level.

The broad activities under the project are :

  • Advocacy and lobbying with the government.Work with relevant departments for the proper implementation of the Protection of women from domestic violence act 2005.
  • Building alliance with civil society organizations and networks working on women issues. To raise issues related to women, undertake evidence based research studies and advocate with government of policy and practice change .
  • Supporting women facing domestic violence. Link them with various support mechanisms like legal aid, medical facilities, filing cases under relevant legal provisions, shelter services, economic opportunities through Women Support Centers
  • Community Mobilization engaging both men and women. To generate awareness on women’s rights and legal provisions and support services to deal with violence against women incidences
  • Building local leadership through capacitating community based groups. Pressure groups, vigilant committees etc to bring in change in attitude and behavioral level at the community level.

Impact made by partner:

  • ISD has conducted vigilant committee trainings at the district level in 2013-14.
  • They also conducted marriage registration camps, organized public hearings involving the government officials in four districts.
  • Organized mass awareness campaigns in remote locations of four districts in coordination with district administration
  • Conducted cultural campaigns to spread awareness on domestic violence during 16 Days of Activism
  • The Kandhamal Women Support Centre has dealt with cases of Domestic violence and have provided counselling, legal, medical, shelter and vocational support to them
