Oxfam India’s Oxygen Plant To Help Saran District During COVID-19 Pandemic Inaugurated

06 SEPTEMBER, 2021: The District Magistrate of Saran district, Shri Dr. Nilesh Ramchandra Deore, IAS, inaugurated a new Oxygen plant at the Sub-Divisional hospital in Sonepur today. The 365 litre per minute (LPM) Oxygen plant has been set up by Oxfam India as part of its Mission Sanjeevani. The Oxygen plant will help the hospital tackle the cases of COVID-19 in the future.

The Sub-Divisional hospital is the only hospital in the Sonepur block which provides referral services and medical treatment at a specialist institution for more than 8.5 lakh people. The hospital has centralised setup of Oxygen pipeline for 48 beds at present. More than 25 patients require Oxygen every day at the Sub-Divisional hospital in Sonepur; this number is bound to increase in the impending third wave.

“The second wave of COVID-19 witnessed a massive shortage of Oxygen due to which many people lost their lives. Through ‘Mission Sanjeevani’ we are strengthening the public healthcare systems and the Oxygen plant is a step towards preparing India for an impending third wave. The Sonepur Oxygen plant is the second of the 10 Oxygen plants being set up across the country,” said Pankaj Anand, Director, Oxfam India.

Oxfam India set up its first Oxygen plant in Tumkur Karnataka. It was inaugurated on 26 July 2021.

Oxfam India has been on the ground since March 2020 in 16 states. Through our COVID-19 response we have given INR 2.96 Crore as direct cash transfer to 9481 vulnerable households. We have reached 506,240 people with one month’s supply of dry ration. Through ‘Mission Sanjeevani’ (since April this year) we have provided critical lifesaving equipment and diagnostic equipment support such as oxygen cylinders (over 750), concentrators (over 200), digital thermometers (over 2000), oximeters (over 1200) along with 20,000 COVID testing kits, over 80,000 Community Safety kits and almost 15,000 PPE kits for healthcare and frontline workers.

Oxfam India CEO Amitabh Behar said: “For Oxfam India, the primary focus during the pandemic is health. We are reaching out to public healthcare institutions, district administrations and Covid Care Centres with medical equipment and diagnostic equipment along with PPE kits and safety kits for frontline health workers. We are also providing testing kit and training to 50,000 ASHA workers across nine states”.
