Oxfam is responding to the urgent humanitarian crisis resulting from the devastation unleashed by the floods in Jammu and Kashmir. The state is facing one of its worst natural disasters in a century. The impact will need to be negated with a long term humanitarian, rehabilitation and reconstruction plan.
Nearly 80,000 people have been rescued so far by the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Thousands are being rescued by volunteers in Srinagar. The situation in Srinagar is very grim and people are making desperate calls for rescue and help. South Kashmir is still inaccessible making it impossible to access the situation. Other worst affected areas are Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu.
The loss of life has been significant, but evacuation and rescue operations are still underway.
Oxfam is part of the National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) core group of humanitarian aid effort. Our team is on the ground to conduct a thorough assessment in Jammu and Kashmir. The contingency stock has been mobilized. Oxfam is in the process of transporting water treatment tablets and equipment to the region.
