Introduction

The poor require steady flow of input supplies, technical support for enhanced productivity, new technologies for making production more efficient, advisory services on value addition possibilities, financial services and lastly market linkages. Further, for developing robust sustainable livelihoods models understanding the full value chain, starting from input purchase to selling in the market, too have become critical. After allocating huge resources to support poverty reduction programs also ensuring sustainable livelihoods to the poor remains a big challenge, given the large population of poor in India. In order to understand and assess the key issues and challenges that the sector faces and also to craft a vision and a strategy for its growth, ACCESS introduced the idea of annually organizing the Livelihoods India Initiative, a national platform on livelihoods with an aim at informing and influencing policy, showcasing best practices and addressing key challenges and issues faced by the sector. Oxfam India will play the role of a funding support organization and also participate in the Advisory Group meetings. This will help ACCESS in organizing the Conference expeditiously. Oxfam India’s experiences and contacts would enable ACCESS in carrying out the tasks successfully, and also in forging important partnerships in the sector.
