Introduction

Chaupal, led by Adivasi grassroot activist, is working in Surguja district from 2005 on the issues of right to food and right to work among the adivasis. Chaupal started work on the right to natural resource management and livelihood with demanding implementation of Forest Rights Act (FRA) in 2012. Chaupal provided awareness training to the adivasi community, particularly Pahadi Korwa to mobilize their Gram Sabhas and to constitute Forest Rights Committees (FRCs).

Impact by partner
  • Provided the 42 Gram Sabhas with titles of Community Forest and resource rights over more than 21,000 hect of forest land in the district of Surguja under FRA.
  • First time in Chhattisgarh the community won over the tedious process of claiming rights over forest through the procedure established under FRA.
  • Now, the community is planning sustainable management of forest along with strengthening their own livelihood based on forest resources.
