Introduction

The project aims to document existing grassroots and policy initiatives in a range of socio-economic, political and environmental arenas such as natural resource management, rural and urban livelihoods, and enterprise, alternative education and media, and community arts and crafts among others. It also aims to organise gatherings of people involved with such initiatives. A website which is up and running ( www.vikalpsangam.org ) is facilitating information sharing and cross learning.

Though successful, such alternatives had limited impact on society and got least recognition. This may be because they were not documented and presented at right platforms from where their adoptability, adaptability and acceptability could be promoted. This project aims at collecting, collating, documenting and disseminating such exemplary works with to evolve common understanding and articulation of common principles and in the long run, coherent conceptual and theoretical frameworks for alternatives.
