Introduction

Muslims are the largest minority group in Uttar Pradesh with 18.5% population share as per 2001 Census. In Lucknow the community constitutes 26% of the total population. It has already been established by Sachchar Committee & various other credible reports that socio economic condition of Muslims is no less pathetic than Scheduled Tribes & Scheduled Caste communities in the country. The livelihood mainstay of majority of Muslims in Lucknow has been traditional artisan work & handicrafts such as Chikankari, Zari Zardozi embroidery, metal or wood craft. Lucknow is known for its Chikankari & Zardozi craft skills. In Uttar Pradesh there are about 1.5 crore families & 700000 families in Lucknow district alone are involved in this occupation according to the estimate by an agency.
