Introduction

In September 2013 Muzaffarnagar & Shamli districts witnessed unfortunate incidence of communal rights officially claiming 49 lives, inflicting serious injuries displacing over 50,000 families who were forced to live in relief camps. Majority of the displaced & affected families belonged to marginalized Muslim community working as agriculture & construction labourers, masons or working at Jaggery units & brick kilns, street vendors or rickshaw pullers. However, irrespective of the status whether these families have moved to their own villages or relocation sites their struggle for survival, livelihoods & lost dignity still remains a major challenge. Those displaced & affected are mostly labourers, artisans and street vendors or hawkers who’ve lost their tools & implements, carts or Cycle Rickshaws during the riots leaving them deprived of means & source of their livelihoods.
