Introduction

The unsustainability and inequities of current models of ‘development’ necessitate the search for alternative frameworks and practices. This project aims at documenting existing grassroots and policy initiatives in a range of socio-economic, political and environmental arenas such as natural resource management, rural and urban livelihoods and enterprise, alternative education and media, and community arts and crafts among others. In addition, organized gatherings of people involved with these initiatives – termed Vikalp Sangams (alternative confluences) – and support for continuing and enhancing an associated website will facilitate exchange, constructive criticism and mutual learning followed by public outreach opportunities, and the evolution of a broad vision of alternative futures.
