A struggle for survival: Assam Floods
Incessant floods in Assam left lakhs of people homeless. Every day is a struggle. They have no access to food, clean water or sanitation facilities.
Oxfam India is rigorously working with flood-affected communities and have assisted thousands of households with dry food materials, hygiene kits, and shelter kits to help survivors meet basic necessities. Oxfam India is now helping families to recover from this disaster and live sustainable lives.
Survivors share their stories and one day hopes to lead a normal life again.
“We lost everything and now we don’t know by when we can live the life we had." - Gunedhar
Gunedhar a father of four children witnessed the floods wash away his house, farm animals and destroy his agricultural produce. They had no food, shelter or clean water to drink. Due to donations from individuals like you, Gunedhar's family was provided with Oxfam's hygiene and shelter kits. They now live in a temporary shelter with no source of income to meet their ends. Thousands of families like Gunedhar are struggling to recover from their lose.

As the water flooded Renu's house, she fled with her family in search of a safer ground. They were forced to defecate in the open and use flood water for drinking and cooking. Renu was scared that her family like other's in her village will soon fall severely ill. Individuals like you enabled Oxfam to distribute relief kits and helped in controlling the outbreak of diseases. Renu has found hope again with the immediate aid she received. Many like Renu believe that they will be able to lead healthier lives but this can only be possible if continued support is provided to them.

Numolia is leading a life of crisis. The floods destroyed everything he owned. People like you helped Numolia's family receive immediate assistance. They sheltered themselves with Oxfam kit materials like using tarpaulin as the roof and ground sheet as a carpet. The Oxfam bucket helps them contain and purify water. They have survived the floods but what now? Numolia is uncertain about his family’s future and so are lakhs of people in Assam.
