Fully implement the RTE Act within 3 years and make education a reality for every child in India

Reality check! 6 Million children in India are still out of school, five years since the RTE Act came into effect.

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) guarantees 8 years of free and compulsory education to all the children between the ages of 6 and 14 in India.

A staggering 92% of government elementary schools do not comply with all RTE Act norms. The poor implementation of this act is affecting millions of children and their families across the country, depriving them of their basic right. This needs to change immediately!

That's why along with our partners we have started this petition asking the Minister of Human Resource Development, Smt. Smriti Irani to come out with a clear and accountable roadmap to fully implement the Right to Education Act within next 3 years.

India is now a middle income country and can afford to give every child the education that is its right. Here are the top 5 reasons why millions of children are denied their right to education:

  1. Inadequate budget allocation despite promising to spend 6% of GDP on education. The public spending on education has stagnated at around 3% of GDP over the last 15 years.
  2. Lack of awareness amongst the citizens on their children's right to education
  3. Ineffective Grievance Redressal mechanism to address non-compliance
  4. Lack of trained teachers and schools complying with Pupil Teacher Ratio in the schools
  5. Lack of compliance by private schools to admit children belonging to socially disadvantaged and economically weaker sections
  6. Inequality in India is rising at an alarming rate and our future is at stake. Education is the greatest equalizer against inequality.

Together we can make sure that every child in India is educated to create a more equal society. #HaqBantaHai #EvenItUp
