I, Somasekhar Sundaresan, leave for my expedition to Island Peak later today.  This time, I am supporting Humsafar, a Lucknow-based women's rights organisation and self-help group. I visited them last month as part of the Oxfam India board meeting and their work is really impressive - badly battered and abused women have become empowered to stand up and assert their rights against their men and the State, with tangible results.

Lucknow, at the heart of India's heartland, is seeing an e-rickshaw revolution thanks to these women who have started plying electric rickshaws and building their self-esteem and lives with them.

About Humsafar

Humsafar runs a support centre for women survivors of domestic violence in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. In this support centre, women survivors are provided paralegal, legal, medical, social mediation, rescue, shelter and rehabilitation support.

They also mobilise the community through nigrani samitis (all-women neighbourhood watch groups) that help identify cases of domestic violence and raise awareness on women’s rights and preventing violence against women.

But Humsafar is finding it difficult to sustain the support centre. They need financial aid.

How you can help?

Somasekhar seeks your support for this cause and hopes to raise Rs 50 lakhs through this climb. Donations are eligible for tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
