Oxfam India pledges its support to #BringBackOurGirls

Oxfam India

Oxfam India pledges its support to #BringBackOurGirls and highly condemns the actions of militant group Boko Haram. We commend the activism of Nigerian citizens, particularly women in their combined efforts to bring back the 276 kidnapped girls in Nigeria.

Women in Nigeria have taken the lead to draw international attention to this issue and such efforts should be emulated by women in India and around the world.

While search missions are still on in Nigeria, we would like to draw attention to the fact that more than 100 million women have systematically gone missing from Asia’s population through gender-based violence in various forms, such as forced abortions, female feticides, female infanticides, honour killings and dowry deaths.

#BringBackOurGirls should stand for a larger campaign to end the atrocities that are inflicted on women across the world.

We urge all of you to raise awareness against gender-based violence and ask governments, legislatures, judiciaries, law enforcement agencies and civil society to uphold the rights of women.

- Nisha Agrawal, CEO, Oxfam India and Team
