Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality Award Gets Grand Reception
Cinema has immense influence in Indian society, which is why Oxfam India instituted the 'Best Film on Gender Equality' award in partnership with JIO MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival and Star India. Through this first-of-its-kind honour in India, Oxfam India has recognised professional filmmakers who are making cinema which challenge gender-based social norms that lead to gender inequality and consequently violence against women.
The recipient of the award in its inaugural year is ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, a riveting tale of four women of different ages and their hidden desires. The film is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and stars Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur.
The jury comprised Oxfam Global Ambassador Rahul Bose, acclaimed filmmaker Shonali Bose and actor Kunal Kapoor.
The film “takes on marital rape, religious orthodoxy, the sexuality of an older woman, women taking agency over their bodies, expressing and acting on their lust with effervescence, humour and integrity, while never leaving you in any doubt about the ferocity of its intent. In spite of dealing with issues of gravitas, the film never compromises on its cinematic excellence.”
