Floods in Bihar
Oxfam and our local partners are responding to the devastating floods that have hit Bihar state and displaced over 30 lakh (3 million) people. Make a donation to support Oxfam’s emergency response.
The situation
Sixteen districts in the state of Bihar are experiencing serious flooding after monsoon rains caused the Kosi River to break its banks on 18 August.
“Whole villages have been destroyed and people have been left with nothing. Huge numbers are marooned with no food or drinking water. It is vital that we get emergency assistance such as clean water and shelter to these people as soon as possible,” said Nisha Agrawal, CEO of Oxfam India.
What Oxfam is doing
We are distributing contingency stocks of water purification tablets, buckets to store safe water and oral rehydration sachets to prevent the outbreak of disease. We are also constructing temporary shelters, and have used motorboats to rescue people marooned by the floods.
Oxfam India has issued an appeal for funds to allow us to scale up our relief operation. We will spend the money on delivering emergency shelter, food, hygiene items, clean drinking water and safe sanitation to at least 20,000 families in Supaul district.
