Unimaginable Disaster in Haiti – The Worst Earthquake in 200 years!

On Jan 12' 2010, a massive earthquake hit Haiti and its capital Port-au-Prince. The earthquake epicenter was 10 miles south west to the capital city. Thousands are feared to have died from the earthquake as houses and high rise building collapsed across the city. Tens of thousands are still believed to be under concrete rubble. It is one of worst disasters in the history of the country.

Search and rescue operations have begun in earnest by many countries trying to help save as many lives as possible from under collapsed concrete debris and destroyed houses. Infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, police stations and other essential service providers have all but collapsed. The country is going through on the worst humanitarian crisis in its history. According to reports the thousands of man women and children are now living in the open without shelter, food or clean water and sanitation.

Oxfam has put up their appeals to provide relief to the people of Haiti. Oxfam is in Haiti and is responding to the disaster and in addition are moving humanitarian specialists from across the region to the affected area to provide safe water, and emergency shelter. Oxfam response to the humanitarian crisis is well underway.  

Jane Cocking - Humanitarian Director Oxfam GB says - "Oxfam has its emergency response team for Latin America based in Haiti so we are well prepared, with a public health, water and sanitation team in Port au Prince ready to respond. We also have emergency supplies in Panama that we are preparing to send in as soon as possible."
