With the Union Budget 2010-11 to be presented in the next ten days, expectations are high that the UPA government in its second year in office will address issues that have a bearing on the poor and marginalised sections of society.

Oxfam India and Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA) organised a consultation with media on February 17, 2010 to discuss key expectations from the Budget in the social sector. The main demands raised through this consultation were:

  • To increase allocation for flagship schemes in health and education, and
  • Effective utilisation of the allocated resources
