Mumbai Meri Jaan-Celebrating Diversity and Pluralism

Activists and celebrities gather in Mumbai defending freedom of expression and democratic rights.


March 6, 2010. Activists and celebrities gathered together in Mumbai  on March 6 defending freedom of expression and democratic rights at an event organized by Anhad with support from Oxfam India and Hivos. The event was titled "Mumbai Meri Jaan’’ and was a celebration of diversity and pluralism.  The event  coincided with India’s celebration of its 60th year of constitution.


The venue was St. Andrews College, Bandra, where celebrities like Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi and Rajat Kapoor joined hands with activists like Shabnam Hashmi of Anhad to advocate for freedom of expression.


The occasion also witnessed an umbrella  painting competition for children of age group 10-15 from various schools. 10 best umbrellas were awarded on their notion of diversity and plural society.


A photo-exhibition revolving around the life of  Mumbai’s auto rickshaw drivers by Sahir Raza, drew inquisitive visitors. There was a cultural extravaganza in the evening.


Many celebrities from various walks like musicians, actors, writers, activities, lawyers, singers, poets expressed in various forms their views on diversity, pluralism and freedom of expression.
