Growing a better future

No one wants to live in the world where people are driven to riots because they can't afford a loaf of bread.

Oxfam believes we have to make three big changes to fix this broken food system

Oxfam's Grow Campaign has a simple message: another future is possible, and we can build it together.

A Broken System

"India produces enough food to feed its people. But in many parts of the country, government supplies of rice and wheat lie unprotected in open air sites."

Everything connects: food and oil prices…falling yields… climate change… growing inequality… market speculation… land grabs. These issues combine to create a system that’s dominated by a few powerful companies and governments – which is failing the rest of us. Fixing this system is a huge challenge though – the biggest we’ve ever faced…

Hunger, Death and Disease

“People were hungry. Someone had dug up the dead goat and they ate it.”

Soon there will be 9 billion of us on the planet. Our societies must grow to meet our needs so we can put enough food on the table for everyone. But already almost a billion of us go to bed hungry every night.

Impact of Food Prices

“Food prices are rising but my wages are not. My salary remains the same. What can I do? If God helps us, we will get some pulses to eat, if not I sleep on and empty stomach.”

The price of staple food items, including rice and vegetables, has increased alarmingly in India in recent times. Food price rise always affects the poor the most as they spend a greater proportion of their earnings on food as compared to other groups. Price rise not only pushes people into poverty but also reduces their nutritional intake per meal.
