
Ammu Joseph is an independent journalist, author and media watcher with more than three decades of experience in this field.
She began her career in Mumbai in the mid-1970s as a reporter and sub-editor in Eve’s Weekly and Star & Style and went on to become editor of the Sunday magazine of The Indian Post. Based in Bangalore and working independently since 1988, she continues to provide valuable inputs and insights as a writer, editor and commentator through various publications, e-journals, websites and blogs, besides teaching at journalism schools and speaking in other forums.
In addition to writing articles and contributing chapters to books on issues relating to gender, human development, child rights and media, Ammu has authored/edited six books, including two on women and media, three on women and literature and one on women’s perspectives on terrorism and counter-terrorism.
Her work on gender and children’s issues brought her the UNFPA-LAADLI Media Award for Gender Sensitivity in 2007 in recognition of her consistent engagement with these issues. She was also conferred the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy in 2003 by the Commission on the Status of Women of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, U.S.A.
Ammu is a founder member of the Network of Women in Media, India.
